Material Management & Beneficial Reuse

Contaminated Waste Treatment

Protecting and restoring the environment is in our DNA.

Englobe is passionate about its role as an environmental steward. For years, we have supported clients with innovative environmental solutions that protect our communities and ecology.

Englobe has pioneered the biopile, a biological treatment process developed in Quebec, Canada.

The biopile is central to our internationally recognised expertise and works by creating favourable conditions for the growth of naturally occurring micro-organisms in soil that consume contaminants. To this end, contaminants are degraded to compounds that are not toxic to the environment.

Englobe’s treatment centres all use this proven biological treatment process as well as a range other innovative recycling technologies such as soil washing, screening and thermal treatment. Once treatment is complete, the soil is reclaimed according to the appropriate standards and a decontamination certificate is issued.

We are guided by the principle that unwanted waste can be converted into substitutes for non-renewable resources. By building on our investment in research and development, and improved infrastructure for managing, treating and reclaiming contaminated materials, our unique approach revolves around protecting living environments.

At Englobe, we understand that these materials, traditionally considered waste, can have real value as a resource once decontaminated. Englobe UK treat over 200,000 tonnes of hazardous  and contaminated material annually and beneficially re-use the treated soils in our Biffa Waste Services restoration schemes to divert from landfill void. This provides complete environmental sustainability for our customers.

By selecting us for your soils and materials recycling, you can be confident that we are fully compliant with all safety, regulatory, environmental, and public health requirements and operate under a ISO 9001, 14001, and 45001 compliant management system.

Protecting the environment has always been at the heart of what we do at Englobe and we are committed to supporting your projects to deliver excellence in environmental compliance, safeguard your assets and enhance quality of life. It’s in our nature to care.

Fields of Expertise

Since 1993 Englobe has operated multiple contaminated soil treatment centres on several continents giving us a unique expertise in the biological treatment of organic contaminants.

To share this unmatched expertise with our clients, we have developed an industry leading digital platform dedicated to meeting our clients’ operational needs. This tool provides our clients and the regulators, with complete traceability of all soils, from excavation to final reclamation.

This includes management of the required sampling regimes, EWC codes, duty of care notices and the exact location at our treatment sites where the soils from construction sites are unloaded for treatment, analytical results from certified laboratories and details on the decontaminated soil that leaves our centres. All of these steps are followed, documented and validated throughout the contaminated soil management and treatment process.

When you choose Englobe, you can be rest assured that your contaminated materials will be handled compliantly.  Our expertise and commitment to quality allows us to achieve the highest standards. We offer a cost-effective, quick and definitive solution for treating your contaminated materials.

We currently have five contaminated soil treatment centres that meet the needs of local and regional markets.

Englobe UK can accept a broad range of contaminated material including soil and stone, dredgings, rail ballast, road filter stone, road sweepings, filter cake and organic residues from treatment  and wash plants
